Best time to visit Sri Lanka: weather and seasons by month

Sri Lanka's weather is split by two monsoons, so the island is rarely wet everywhere at once. The south-west monsoon runs roughly May–September and hits Colombo, Bentota, Galle and Mirissa with rough seas and red flags. The north-east monsoon runs roughly October–January and hits Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay and Jaffna. Between them, the dry zone of the Cultural Triangle stays workable for much of the year, though it is hot and dusty in April–May and wet from the north-east monsoon in October–January.

The practical rule: there is always a dry coast. Choose the south-west November–April, the east April–September. If your dates are fixed, pick the coast that fits rather than trying to see the whole island.

Peak season on the south-west coast is December–February, with a second high season on the east coast in July–August. Expect the highest room rates and the fullest trains and buses then; book Christmas, New Year and the August Perahera period well ahead. Low season falls in May, June, September and November, when prices drop and you can often decide accommodation on arrival.

April is a special case: it is not peak, but the Sinhala and Tamil New Year on 13–14 April closes shops and offices for days and packs transport before and after. Nuwara Eliya fills with local holidaymakers. If you travel then, book transport early and expect some services to pause.

Poya days fall every full moon and are public holidays: no alcohol or meat is sold, temples are busy and some shops shut. Vesak in May brings lanterns, free food stalls and a two-day alcohol ban in Colombo and Kandy. Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April is the one to plan around, because transport fills and businesses close for several days. Thai Pongal in January and Independence Day in February have a smaller effect on travellers.

Pack for two climates. The coast is hot and humid year-round, so light clothing, sun protection and insect repellent matter in every month. The hill country is genuinely cool: Nuwara Eliya nights sit near 5 °C in winter, and Kandy and Ella are showery in May–June, so bring a warm layer and a rain shell even on a beach trip.

In the wet months, add a dry bag for electronics and shoes that cope with mud. In the dry zone in April–May, expect dust, strong sun and hot afternoons; start sightseeing at dawn. If you are heading to Adam's Peak in season, a head torch and warm layers for the 2am start are worth the weight.

For December–February travel, book flights and the first few nights by September–October; Christmas and New Year sell out first. For the east coast in July–August, book Arugam Bay and Trincomalee rooms by spring. Low-season travel needs little planning beyond the first night, though some west-coast hotels close in May–June and September.

Trains on the Kandy–Ella line and the Colombo–Jaffna line are the bookings that go first in any season; reserve as soon as your dates are fixed. Check the ETA route and entry rules before you commit to dates, and leave a wide margin around every flight.
