Things to do in Seoul with kids: best attractions and family tips

Seoul works for children because almost everything sits on one subway map. Two clusters do most of the work: Jamsil (Lotte World, Lotte World Aquarium, Olympic Park) and the city centre (Gyeongbokgung, N Seoul Tower, Children's Grand Park). Pick one cluster per day rather than crossing town twice.

Lotte World in Jamsil is the default full day: an indoor Adventure park plus an outdoor Magic Island, so rain only half-ruins it. COEX Aquarium in Gangnam and the Lotte World Aquarium are the two reliable indoor half-days. Children's Grand Park in Neung-dong combines a free zoo, a small amusement park and open lawns, and is the best value day in the city.

For older kids, add a palace morning at Gyeongbokgung (changing of the guard, hanbok rental nearby), the N Seoul Tower cable car, and a Han River picnic with a rented bike. Under-5s are usually happier with the aquariums and Children's Grand Park than with palaces.

The family stops spread across four areas, all reachable by subway with elevators at most stations.

Jamsil (east): Lotte World, Lotte World Aquarium, Olympic Park. Line 2 or 8 to Jamsil.

City centre (north): Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Insadong, N Seoul Tower. Line 3 to Gyeongbokgung, Line 4 to Myeongdong.

Gangnam (south): COEX Aquarium, Bongeunsa temple. Line 2 to Samseong.

East (Neung-dong): Children's Grand Park. Line 7 to Children's Grand Park.

Buy a T-money card for each person and top it up at convenience stores; kids under 6 usually ride the Seoul subway free, and there are child fares for older children. Subway elevators exist at most stations but not all exits, so check the station map before you commit to a stroller route.

Strollers are fine in malls, museums and on the subway, but Bukchon's alleys and the palace grounds have steps and gravel. Baby-care rooms are common in department stores and large malls; less so in small cafés. Most restaurants have high chairs only in chains.

Book Lotte World and the aquariums online for a small discount and to skip the ticket queue, especially on weekends and Korean school holidays. Weekday mornings are the quietest. If you are in Seoul over Lunar New Year or Chuseok, expect some attractions to run reduced hours.

For food, kids do well with gimbap, fried chicken, dumplings and the mild versions of bibimbap; ask for sauces on the side. Convenience-store meals are cheap and reliable for a tired evening.

April to June and September to November are the easiest months: mild temperatures, and in April the cherry blossoms pull crowds to Yeouido and Seokchon Lake next to Lotte World. July and August are hot and wet, which pushes families indoors to the aquariums and malls; January is cold and dry, fine for indoor days but hard on small children outdoors.

Weekends and Korean school holidays (roughly late July to mid-August, plus Lunar New Year and Chuseok) make Lotte World and the aquariums much busier. If you can, go on a Tuesday to Thursday morning. Check the exact holiday dates each year, since they move with the lunar calendar.
