Romantic things to do in Seoul

Seoul rewards couples who move with the light. Start at a palace in the late afternoon, ride the Namsan cable car as the city turns on its lights, then eat and walk somewhere warm. Everything below sits on the subway, so you can chain two or three in one evening without a taxi.

The three that carry a trip: Gyeongbokgung in hanbok, the Namsan cable car and N Seoul Tower deck, and a night walk along Cheonggyecheon. Add a Han River cruise or a jjimjilbang if you have a second evening.

Treat every figure here as a 2026 estimate: palace and tower prices change with the season, and cruise operators price by route and menu. Check the operator's page the week you go, and buy timed entries online where offered — the N Seoul Tower combo and evening cruises are the two that sell out on weekends.

Palaces close one day a week, and Gyeongbokgung's day off has moved between Tuesday and Wednesday in past years, so confirm the current day before you build an evening around it. The hanbok free-entry rule applies at the main palaces and is the single best-value trick on this page: rent for two hours, enter free, and keep the outfit for photos in Bukchon.

Seoul's subway covers all of these. Load a T-money card at any convenience store and tap in; a single ride is about ₩1,400 and a day of hopping around rarely passes ₩6,000. Late evenings are the constraint: trains wind down around midnight, so plan the last leg or budget for a taxi.

For the classic evening, ride Line 3 to Gyeongbokgung for the palace, walk or take a short taxi to Myeongdong, then climb to the cable car. Coming down, Myeongdong Station puts you back on the network for dinner. Cheonggyecheon is a 3-minute walk from City Hall or Jonggak, which makes it the easy add-on after either.

Book the two big-ticket items — the tower combo and any evening cruise — a few days ahead, and pick a weekday. Weekends at Namsan and along the palace walls are crowded enough that the romance is mostly in the queue.

Weather decides the tower. On a clear evening the deck is worth the ticket; in rain, haze or heavy fine dust, skip it and put the money into a hanok tea room or a jjimjilbang instead. Both are indoors, both are cheaper, and both work better in bad weather than a fogged-in observation deck.

Dress for a walk. Bukchon's lanes are steep and residential, with quiet hours enforced, so keep voices down and skip tripods in the narrowest alleys. If you rent hanbok, wear shoes you can actually walk in — the rental shops rarely mention the hills.

April to June and September to November give the best evenings: mild, clear and long enough to do a palace and the tower in one run. Cherry blossom season in early April is the busiest window of the year at the palaces, so book hanbok and any cruise well ahead.

Summer is hot and wet, with the monsoon arriving around late June to July; the stream walk is pleasant after rain but the tower view often disappears. Autumn is the strongest all-round pick, with foliage at the palaces from late October. Winter evenings are cold but clear, and the palaces and tower are far quieter — a good trade if you dress properly.

The picks cluster in three areas: the palace and Bukchon in the north-centre, Myeongdong and Namsan just south of them, and the Han River piers at Yeouido and Jamsil to the west and east. Cheonggyecheon runs through the middle, which is why it works as the walk between the other two.
