Myeongdong is the default for a reason: dense hotels at every price, two subway lines, airport buses, and street food from late afternoon. Rooms are small and the streets are loud until about 23:00, so ask for a high floor away from the main lane. Jongno and Insadong, a short walk north, are quieter and closer to Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung; this is where you find hanok guesthouses and boutique hotels.
Hongdae and Sinchon are university districts: cheapest dorm beds, live music, cafés open late, and a 25–35 minute ride to the palaces. Itaewon, near Yongsan, has the widest range of non-Korean restaurants and is convenient if you want the Namsan area without Myeongdong prices. Gangnam and Samseong are modern and calm, with big-brand hotels, but you will ride the subway for almost every sight.
Seoul Station and Yongsan work if you plan day trips: KTX trains to Busan and the AREX airport line both start here. Yeongjong Island, next to Incheon airport, is only worth it for a single pre-flight night.

Budget travellers should look at hostels in Hongdae, Sinchon and near Seoul Station. Mid-range business hotels cluster in Myeongdong and Jongno. Tips
Book the airport transfer before you land if you arrive after 22:00, when the AREX express stops and late-night taxis cost more. If you are staying in Myeongdong or Jongno, the airport limousine buses drop near most hotels and save you hauling bags through subway stairs.
Pay attention to the exit: Myeongdong station has exits on both sides of a long street, and the wrong one adds ten minutes with luggage. For day trips to Suwon, Incheon or Ansan, a hotel near Seoul Station or on Line 1 saves a transfer. If you plan to work, check the room's Wi-Fi and desk; a local eSIM covers data on the move.
