Best day trips from Seoul: how to get there and what to see

Distances and times below are from central Seoul. Fares are 2026 estimates in won; the site converts them to your currency. Times assume you leave after the morning rush and are back by dinner.

If you have one free day, take Suwon. If you want the trip people remember, take the DMZ. If you want coast and seafood without a long ride, take Incheon.

Hwaseong Fortress rings the old centre with 5.7 km of wall, four gates and a mix of brick and stone work from the late 1700s. Walk a section, climb to the archery pavilion, then eat at the market below. Line 1 subway and the Suwon station trains both get you there in about an hour, so this is the day trip to keep for a tired day.

Go early to walk the wall before the heat, or late afternoon for the floodlights. A full loop on foot takes 2–3 hours at an easy pace; the fortress train and trolley cut that down. Combine it with a market lunch and you are back in Seoul by evening.

The Demilitarized Zone is about an hour north of Seoul near Paju, and you cannot wander it alone. Join a licensed tour from the city; most include Imjingak, the Third Tunnel, Dora Observatory and sometimes Dorasan Station. Passports are checked, dress and behaviour rules apply, and some nationalities need extra clearance.

Tours run daily except on closure days, and the schedule can change at short notice for military or political reasons. Book two or three days ahead in high season, and treat any specific site as a bonus rather than a guarantee. Half-day tours leave early; full-day tours add a Korean War site or the Joint Security Area when it is open.

Incheon is the airport city most visitors only pass through, but the old port has a Chinatown, a Japanese-style street, a market and a waterfront. Subway Line 1 and the Suin–Bundang line reach it in about an hour. Ferries from the coastal terminal go to islands such as Yeongjong and, in season, further out; check sailing times before you commit.

This is the day trip for a slow start: noodles in Chinatown, a walk on Wolmido with the sea on one side and fairground rides on the other, then back on the subway. It pairs well with an early flight the next morning.

Chuncheon is the closest lake town, about 1 h 10 by ITX train, known for dakgalbi and the Soyang River. Gangneung is 2 hours by KTX on the east coast: a beach, a coffee street and a market, best in summer or early autumn. Gyeongju, the Silla capital, is 2 h 15 by KTX and really wants a full day or an overnight for the tomb mounds, Bulguksa and Seokguram. Jeonju, 1 h 40 by KTX, is the hanok village and bibimbap town, and is the one most people wish they had slept in.

The rule of thumb: under 1.5 hours each way is a comfortable day; 2 hours each way is a long day; 3 hours each way means stay the night. If you are doing two or more of these, price a KR Pass against separate tickets.

Train and subway fares are the main cost, and they are modest by US or UK standards. Tours cost far more than doing it yourself, but the DMZ is the one place where a tour is the only practical option. Add lunch, a coffee and any entry fees.

A Suwon or Incheon day runs roughly ₩20,000–40,000 per person including food. A KTX day to Gangneung or Gyeongju runs ₩80,000–120,000 with lunch and entries (about US$60–90). The DMZ sits in between at ₩60,000–120,000 depending on the tour.

Buy train tickets on the Korail app or at the station; KTX seats for weekend mornings sell out. For the subway, a T-money card covers Seoul, Suwon and Incheon. Check the last train back before you leave, especially from Gangneung and Gyeongju.

Weekday trips are quieter than weekends, and Monday closures hit some museums and palaces. Carry a charged phone with a map app and an eSIM if you do not have a local SIM. In summer, start early; in winter, the light goes by 17:30.
