West, Seoul: neighborhood guide

West Seoul covers two districts, Gangseo and Yangcheon, on the far side of the Han River from the old centre. It is mostly housing: apartment blocks, schools, local markets and office towers around Magok. Nothing here is on a standard first-trip list, and that is the point — you get ordinary Seoul at ordinary prices.

Gangseo holds Gimpo International Airport (GMP), the Magok business district and a stretch of riverside park along the Han. Yangcheon is built around Mokdong: wide apartment complexes, sports facilities, a department store, an ice rink and a grid of neighbourhood restaurants and small bars that fill up with residents after work.

The one sight that pulls visitors across town is Seoul Botanic Park in Magok, a large park with lakes and a glass greenhouse kept near 30 °C year-round. Everything else — a wetland park on the river, a museum on Joseon medicine, a couple of towers — is low-key and best if you are already nearby.

Stay if your trip is built around Gimpo Airport, if you have meetings in Magok, or if you want a calm, cheaper base and do not mind a 30–50 minute subway ride to the sights. Families and longer stays often like Mokdong for the space and the everyday food streets.

Skip it on a first visit. The palaces, Insadong, Myeongdong and the main nightlife are all across the river; you would spend two hours a day commuting. If you land at Incheon (ICN) late and leave from Gimpo early, one night here is practical — otherwise sleep in the centre and pass through.

Eat where the residents eat: Mokdong's restaurant streets and the blocks around Magongnaru and Gimpo Airport stations. Expect Korean barbecue, noodles, stews, fried chicken and café culture at prices below the tourist centre. Many places are Korean-menu only, so a translation app or pointing works better than English.

Near the airport, food courts and hotel restaurants are the easy option; in Mokdong, look for a busy room at dinner and you will do fine. This is everyday Korean cooking rather than a food destination, so do not cross the city for it.

Gimpo International Airport (GMP) sits inside Gangseo and handles domestic flights plus short international routes to Japan and China. Subway lines 5 and 9 serve the airport, and the Airport Railroad (AREX) links Gimpo with Incheon Airport (ICN) and Seoul Station; the Gimpo–Incheon run is roughly 30 minutes, and Gimpo–Seoul Station is quicker still (check current timetables).

Within the area, Line 5 runs east toward the city centre and Line 9 gives a faster express option along the river. The Gimpo Gold Line and Seohae Line extend west into Gyeonggi. Buses fill the gaps between stations. Taxis are cheap by US or European standards and useful at night.
