Jongno, Seoul: neighborhood guide
Stay in Jongno if you want palaces, hanok lanes and old-Seoul food within a 20-minute walk, and you accept quiet nights and a 30–40 minute subway ride to Gangnam. Skip it if you want late clubs or a modern mall base. Anguk and Jongno-3ga are the useful stations.

What Jongno is like
Jongno (종로) is the northern half of Seoul's historic core; Jung is the southern half. Four of the five grand Joseon palaces sit here — Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung and Gyeonghuigung — along with Jongmyo Shrine, Jogyesa Temple, the Bukchon hanok lanes, Insadong and the Hyehwa theatre quarter.
The district runs from the government and museum belt around Gwanghwamun up to the slopes of Bukaksan, and east to Dongdaemun. That range matters: 'Jongno' covers both a hotel beside Gwanghwamun Plaza and a guesthouse 25 minutes' walk uphill in Bukchon. Check the address against the nearest subway exit before booking.
Days here are for sightseeing and eating; evenings are calm. Winter is cold and dry, January roughly -8 °C to 1 °C, and July is the wettest month with about 318 mm of rain, so plan indoor stops for midsummer afternoons.
Getting around and getting in
From Incheon Airport (ICN), the AREX train runs to Seoul Station, then transfer to Lines 1, 3 or 5 or take a taxi; allow about 1 h 30 door to door. Airport buses also stop around Gwanghwamun and Jongno (check current routes). From Gimpo (GMP), the subway and AREX are quicker.
Inside the district, walking beats the subway for Gyeongbokgung–Bukchon–Insadong–Jongmyo, but the blocks are long and the lanes climb. Use Anguk or Gyeongbokgung (Line 3), Jongno-3ga (Lines 1, 3, 5), Gwanghwamun (Line 5) and Dongdaemun (Lines 1, 4). A T-money card covers subway, bus and taxi payment.
Taxis are cheap by US and European standards and useful at night or in rain; tipping is not expected. Gwanghwamun Plaza is a straightforward walk from Jung along Sejong-daero, past the statues of King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-sin.
