Songpa, Seoul: neighborhood guide

Songpa (송파) sits in southeast Seoul on the Han River, next to Gangdong. It was the Baekje capital area in the early centuries AD, then a Gyeonggi village, and only became a Seoul district in 1988. The 1988 Olympics left the biggest mark: Olympic Park, the sports complex and the wide roads that still define the area.

Today it is a planned, residential district of large apartment blocks around Jamsil, with Lotte World Tower and its mall, the Lotte World theme park and aquarium, and Seokchon Lake. Garak Market, one of the city's main wholesale food markets, is here too. Streets are wider and calmer than in Jongno or Gangnam, and the riverside parks give it a greener feel than most of Seoul.

Gangdong, further east, is quieter still: Godeok and Cheonho are local neighborhoods with riverside and ecological parks. If you want a base that feels like ordinary Seoul rather than a tourist zone, this side of the city delivers that.

Choose Songpa if your days are built around Lotte World, Olympic Park, Jamsil's malls and concerts, or a baseball game. Hotels cluster near Jamsil station and the tower, and Line 2 puts Gangnam 15–20 minutes away. Families with children do well here: the theme park, aquarium and lake walk are all within a few minutes of each other.

Look elsewhere if this is your first Seoul trip and you want palaces, Insadong, markets and nightlife. Those sit in Jongno and Jung, 30–40 minutes by subway, and you would pay that twice a day. Solo travellers chasing bars and late food will find more life in Hongdae or Itaewon. Couples wanting cafés and galleries often prefer Seocho or Hannam.

A middle option: stay in Songpa for two or three nights around a Lotte World or concert date, then move central. Splitting a week across two districts costs one subway ride with luggage and saves daily commuting.

Food here is everyday Seoul food rather than a destination dining scene. Around Jamsil station and the tower you get mall food courts, chain restaurants and cafés; the streets behind Jamsil and around Seokchon Lake have barbecue, cold noodles and late-night chicken and beer. Prices are normal Seoul levels: a bowl of noodles or a rice dish around ₩9,000–14,000, barbecue per person ₩15,000–25,000 (2026 estimate).

Garak Market is the reason to eat in Songpa. The wholesale market has restaurant stalls serving raw fish (hoe) and seafood stews at prices below tourist areas; go at lunch, when the market is busiest. Expect to pay roughly ₩20,000–40,000 per person for a shared fish platter (2026 estimate).

For a quick meal, convenience stores and bakery chains are everywhere, and the malls stay open later than most local restaurants. Vegetarians and vegans should ask: many stews and side dishes use fish sauce, anchovy stock or meat broth.

Songpa is well covered by subway. Line 2 stops at Jamsil (the main hub, with Lotte World Tower and the department store above it). Line 3 serves Garak Market and Ogeum. Line 5 serves Olympic Park and Bangi. Line 8 runs through the district toward Namhansanseong, and Line 9 stops at Sports Complex and Seokchon. Fares are distance-based, roughly ₩1,400–1,600 per ride with a T-money card (2026 estimate).

To central Seoul, ride Line 2 from Jamsil toward City Hall: about 30–40 minutes. To Gangnam, Line 2 the other way, 15–20 minutes. From Incheon Airport, take the AREX train to Seoul Station and transfer to Line 2, or use an airport limousine bus; allow 1 h 20–1 h 40 door to door (check).

By car, Olympic Boulevard runs along the river and the Dongbu Expressway and Bundang line pass the west of the district, with Jamsil and Olympic bridges crossing the Han. Roads are among the widest in Seoul, but parking near Lotte World on weekends is painful; the subway is faster.
