Senggigi is Lombok's main tourist strip: a two-lane coastal road with hotels, warungs and dive shops spread over about 8 km between Batu Bolong in the south and Mangsit in the north. The town centre is lively at night; the beaches are dark sand and the swimming is average. Most travellers use it as a base for the Gili Islands, waterfalls and Rinjani, not as a beach holiday in itself.

Getting around

Bemo pick-ups cover short hops (Rp 4,500–5,500 to Ampenan) but stop by dusk. Metered Bluebird and Express taxis are the reliable option; flag fall about Rp 4,250. Ojek from about Rp 5,000 for a short ride. Cidomo horse carts are for short trips only — agree Rp 10,000 maximum before you board. Scooter rental about Rp 80,000/day; car Rp 150,000–450,000/day.

Watch out

Safety

Senggigi is a low-crime tourist area; the real risks are scooter accidents, unlicensed rentals without insurance, rip currents on the beaches and unlit road edges after dark. Use a metered taxi at night rather than a scooter.
  • Beaches are dark sand and can be littered; hawkers are persistent.
  • Bemos stop running by dusk on the west coast — plan the last leg by taxi.
  • Riding a scooter or car needs your home licence plus an International Drivers Permit matching the vehicle class; carry your passport or a copy.
  • Agree cidomo, ojek and charter-bemo prices before you get in.
  • Dec–Mar can bring rough seas and cancelled fast-boat crossings to the Gilis.
