Ubud Ubud

Ubud is a sunrise-and-evening town: do the Campuhan ridge and the Monkey Forest early, rest at midday, and book a driver for anything outside the centre — the airport is 1.5–2 hours away, so a late landing decides whether the villa door is open.

Overview

Ubud is a set of villages joined by a few busy roads. Distances look short on a map and take twice as long in traffic, pavements end without warning, and monkeys, dogs and motorbikes share the same lanes. The trips that fail are the late landing with a two-hour drive to a locked homestay, and the scooter without a licence. Four walking clusters cover a first visit; rice terraces and waterfalls are driver days from one kept bed.

Fits

  • Slow culture trips
  • Early risers and walkers
  • Couples and solo travellers who avoid beach crowds

Does not fit

  • Strollers and wheelchairs (pavements)
  • Travellers who want a beach at the door

Arrive

Gateways
Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS)Launch profile 21:00 → Ubud centre: feasible

DPS to Ubud: one prebooked driver or an airport-counter taxi, 1.5–2 hours — the risk is not the ride but a villa that stops answering the door after 22:00.

Move

Default
Walk inside a cluster in the morning; ride-hailing car or a hired driver between clusters and for day trips.
Passes
No pass. A driver by the day is the normal way to reach rice terraces and temples; agree the price and route in advance.
Last trains
No rail on Bali; ride-hailing availability drops late at night and in rain, and some pickup points are restricted by local drivers.

Luggage

Rule: Ubud lanes have broken pavement, steps and open drains: large suitcases go from the car to the door, never on a walk.
Lockers
No public lockers; hotels and villas hold bags after check-out.
Forwarding
No forwarding service; your driver carries bags between bases.
Dead zone
Late-evening flights: ask the hotel to hold bags and give you a room to shower; many do for a fee.

Clusters

Walking polygons, not wards

Morning cluster: palace forecourt and market before 09:00, Saraswati Temple pond, lunch at a warung by 12:30; hot and crowded by 11:00.

Days

Sunrise outside, midday in the shade, evenings on foot; the last day ends with the bags already in the car.

Places

Curated — verdicts, not rankings
Campuhan Ridge Walk
go at hour before 08:00admission: unknown

Go at first light, 06:00–08:00: 60–90 minutes out and back, free, almost no shade after 09:30.

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary
go at hour at openingadmission: unknown

Go at opening: about 60 minutes on the paths, dress for temples, and carry nothing in your hands that a monkey can take.

Eat

Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka

Walk-in roast pork (babi guling), one dish: go at opening or after 13:30, since the plate sells out.

Sleep

Areas, not hotels
Penestanan and Campuhan (rice-field villas)

Quieter nights in villas over rice fields, but the last 200 m is a dark lane with steps: arrive before 21:00 or pay for a driver who waits.

Desk: staffed window until 22:00

Ubud centre

First night: a hotel with a 24h desk in or near the centre — the late-night drive from the airport is long, and a homestay with no night staff is the failure mode.

Desk: staffed 24h

Survive

Safety

  • Wear a helmet on any motorbike, and never ride without a valid licence and insurance.
  • Do not touch or feed monkeys; clean any bite and see a doctor the same day.
  • Drink bottled or filtered water only.
  • Emergency: 112 general, 110 police, 118 or 119 ambulance.

Red lines

  • Temples: sarong and sash, shoulders and knees covered; do not enter a ceremony unless invited.
  • Do not step on offerings on the pavement, and do not climb on shrines.
  • Do not photograph people at close range in ceremonies without asking.

Practical

  • Toilets: cafés and warungs; carry tissue and small change.
  • Tap water is not for drinking.
