Gili Trawangan is the largest and busiest of the three Gili Islands off Lombok: no cars, no motorbikes, one footpath around the coast and a dive industry that fills the east side. The east is where boats land, bars run late and most beds sit; the north and west are quieter and better for sleep. Three nights covers diving, a lap of the island and a hop to Gili Air or Gili Meno. Getting here is the hard part: crossings from Bali or Lombok are weather-dependent and the public boat from Bangsal is cheap but slow to fill.

Getting around

Walk: the coastal path circles the island in about 1.5–2 h, with sandy stretches where you push a bike. Bicycles rent for roughly Rp 30,000–50,000 per day; inland rentals are usually cheaper. Cidomo (horse cart) for bags from the landing, about Rp 40,000 for a short hop. No cars or motorbikes on the island.

Watch out

Safety

The island is small and low-crime; the real risks are the boat crossing, sunburn, coral cuts, scooter-free but uneven sandy paths at night, and cheap spirits. Use reef-safe sunscreen and never snorkel alone.
  • Boat crossings are weather-dependent: services can be cancelled, especially Jan–Feb, and you may get wet in Jul–Aug swell. Waterproof your electronics.
  • You usually wade through shallow water to disembark: wear sandals or go barefoot.
  • At Bangsal, touts claim boats and ATMs are unavailable. Buy tickets only from the official Koperasi Angkutan Laut Karya Bahari desk.
  • ATMs exist (12+ on the east side) but exchange rates are worse than on Lombok or Bali; bring rupiah.
  • Island nightlife includes cheap spirits and, historically, methanol incidents in Indonesia: drink sealed, branded bottles.
  • No police station on the island; serious problems mean a boat to Lombok.
