Senaru is a hill village on Rinjani's northern slope, about 1 h 15 min by road from Bangsal harbour. It is the main trailhead for Mount Rinjani and the base for two waterfalls, Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep, reached on foot from the village. Most travellers stay one or two nights: one for the waterfalls, two if you add a Rinjani trek or a coffee-plantation walk. It is a village, not a resort town — expect simple guesthouses, cool nights and early darkness.

Getting around

On foot. The village is small and the waterfall path starts from the top of the steps near the road. For Ancak market, Pura Penataran Agung Rinjani or the coast, use a chartered car, ojek or your guesthouse's transport — there is no useful public bus inside the village.

Watch out

Safety

Senaru is a small, quiet village and violent crime is rare. The real issues are aggressive informal guides at the waterfall gate, slippery trails, unlit roads after dark and altitude on Rinjani — carry cash, wear grippy shoes and arrange transport before nightfall.
  • Informal 'guides' at the waterfall gate demand payment; a guide is not required for Sendang Gile, and the entrance fee is posted at the booth — ask to see an Izin (permit) if pressed.
  • The path to Tiu Kelep involves a steep climb, a creek crossing and slippery rock; wear shoes with grip and take a pole.
  • Roads are narrow and unlit after dark; avoid scooter riding at night.
  • Cold water in most budget rooms; hot water is a mid-range feature.
  • Cash only at most guesthouses and warungs; the nearest reliable ATMs are in Bayan or Tanjung.
