Best time to visit Saudi Arabia: weather and seasons by month

The table below is the short version: what each month is like, how busy it gets and whether prices are high or low. Use it to pick a window, then check the region you are actually visiting — a good month in Riyadh can be a bad one in Jeddah, and the other way round.

Saudi Arabia is large enough that one national season hides five different climates. The Najd (Riyadh, Diriyah, Qassim, the Edge of the World) is dry desert: 45 °C+ in June to August and genuinely cold nights of 5–10 °C in January, with dust storms from March to May. The Red Sea coast (Jeddah, Yanbu, the resorts) is humid all year, so summer feels like 45–50 °C and winter is the only comfortable walking season.

The north-west (AlUla, Hegra, Tabuk, Hail) has the best balance from November to March, but near-freezing desert nights in December and January — snow falls some years on Jabal al-Lawz near Tabuk. The Asir mountains (Abha, Rijal Almaa, Al-Baha, Ta'if) sit above 2,000 m and are the summer escape: 20–30 °C with afternoon storms and fog, and cold in winter. The Gulf coast (Dammam, Khobar, Al-Ahsa) is very humid in summer, with shamal winds bringing dust in early summer.

Practical consequence: if you are travelling in July or August, build the trip around Asir and indoor sights, not Riyadh. If you are travelling in January, plan warm layers for AlUla and desert camping.

January and February are the coolest and most comfortable months across most of the country: mild, dry days and cold nights, especially in the desert and the north-west. This is peak season for AlUla and the Riyadh events, so hotels and flights are at their most expensive.

March and April are transitional. March is still pleasant but Ramadan and Eid can fall in these months, changing opening hours and restaurant rhythms. April brings 35 °C+ afternoons in Riyadh and sandstorms; the Red Sea coast holds up better early in the month. May and June push the centre past 40 °C, and Hajj in May 2027 affects Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah.

July and August are the hottest stretch: 45 °C+ inland and humid, punishing coasts. Only the Asir highlands, the Red Sea for diving, and indoor attractions make sense. September is still hot, with National Day on 23 September bringing events and road closures. October is the turn: heat eases late in the month and the Riyadh Season and AlUla event calendars restart. November and December are comfortable almost everywhere except Asir nights, and busy with festivals and conferences.

Numbers here are typical ranges, not forecasts. Check a forecast for your exact dates and city before you pack.

Prices track the weather. December to February and the October–November festival window are high season: AlUla, Riyadh Season events and desert camps fill up, and flights into Riyadh and AlUla cost the most. June to September outside Asir is the cheapest stretch, because few people want 45 °C — but note that Abha's summer season makes the Asir highlands busy and pricier in exactly those months.

Religious dates matter more than the calendar here. Ramadan (about 8 Feb – 9 Mar 2027) means no eating, drinking or smoking in public in daylight, including for non-Muslims; restaurants open at sunset for iftar and stay open late; shops close in the afternoon and reopen until 01:00–02:00; offices work short hours. Eid al-Fitr follows immediately and fills flights and hotels. Hajj and Eid al-Adha (about 14–19 May 2027) put Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah under pilgrim restrictions, pause Umrah permits and book out domestic travel.

Founding Day (22 February) and National Day (23 September) are public holidays with events and road closures. All lunar dates move each year — check before you book.

Dress and behaviour rules apply year-round and are stricter in Ramadan: modest clothing, no public eating or drinking in daylight during the fast, and local rules on photography and alcohol. Summer heat is a genuine safety issue — plan outdoor sightseeing before 10:00 and after 16:00, carry water, and treat midday as indoor time. Desert nights in winter are cold enough for a proper jacket, even if the day was warm.

Entry is via the eVisa on the official portal; sort that before you fix dates, since processing and eligibility rules can change. Getting around between Riyadh, Jeddah and AlUla is mostly by domestic flight, so your chosen month also decides how much of the trip is spent indoors.

Start with what you want to see. If it is Riyadh, Diriyah, the Edge of the World, Jeddah's old town or AlUla and Hegra, aim for late October to early March. If it is the Asir mountains, Ta'if and Abha, aim for May to August. If it is diving on the Red Sea, winter and early spring give the calmest, most comfortable conditions.

Then check two things before you commit: the lunar calendar (Ramadan, Eid, Hajj) and the event calendar (Riyadh Season, AlUla events, Founding Day, National Day). Both change prices and opening hours more than the weather does. Finally, compare the month you have chosen against the region table above — a trip that mixes Riyadh in August with Abha in August works; the reverse order does not.
