Major city · United States

Cambridge, MassachusettsCambridge

Base in Harvard Square or Central Square for 2 nights and walk the campuses; skip Cambridge as a separate trip if you only have 3 days in Boston.

Cambridge is a separate city from Boston, not a neighbourhood: two universities, five walkable squares and the Red Line run through it. Most visitors give it one full day plus a half-day, sleeping here only if they want a quieter, cheaper base than downtown Boston.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

The MBTA Red Line links Kendall/MIT, Central, Harvard and Porter; the Green Line reaches Lechmere in East Cambridge. Subway fare is $2.40 with free transfers between lines (2026 estimate, check); tap a contactless card or phone at the gate. Buses cost $1.70 local. Service starts after 5:30AM and ends before 12:15AM on weekdays. Cambridge is flat and bike-friendly; Bluebikes docks are everywhere. Driving is not advised: many one-way streets, no grid, and parking is scarce.

Watch out

Safety

Cambridge is a low-risk US city for visitors; the real issues are icy pavements in winter, late-night last trains and bike theft. Stick to lit squares after midnight and use 911 for anything urgent.
  • Last T trains run before 12:15AM; plan the return leg or budget for a taxi.
  • Commuter rail at Porter does not take CharlieCards or contactless taps — buy at the machine or in the mTicket app.
  • Lock your bike frame and both wheels; bike theft is quick here.
  • Most streets are one-way and not on a grid; a wrong turn adds 10–15 min.
  • Sales tax is added at the till; restaurant bills expect 18–22% tip.
