Saudi Arabia itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks

Match the route to your nights, not to a wish list. Every option below uses domestic flights between regions, because road transfers of 8–12 hours eat a day each way.

Nights below are the plan, and the totals are stated honestly: the 10-day shape uses 9 nights, and the 14-day loop uses 13 nights, so add the extra night where you want the slower pace. Book the internal flight before you lock hotels; winter seats on Riyadh–AlUla fill early.

Days 1–4 in Riyadh. Land, sleep, then take the old centre in one block: Masmak Fortress in the morning, the National Museum and Murabba Palace at midday, Souq Al-Zal before it closes. Give Diriyah a separate late afternoon into dinner at At-Turaif. Keep one full day for the Edge of the World escarpment, which is a guided or 4x4 day trip from the city, not a self-drive on a whim.

Day 5 fly to AlUla. Across the three AlUla nights, treat Hegra (Mada'in Salih), the old mud-brick town, Dadan and the Jabal Ikmah inscriptions, and Elephant Rock at sunset as options to spread over the stay rather than a single day. Hegra access is by organised tour, so reserve before you fly; whether Dadan, Jabal Ikmah and Elephant Rock can be combined on one day depends on current tour schedules and opening times (check).

Fly home from AlUla via Riyadh or Jeddah. If your return is from Jeddah, add the connection time rather than squeezing in Al-Balad.

The 10-day version is the cleanest two-week shape: Riyadh 3 nights, AlUla 3, Jeddah 3, with a spare night at each end for flight changes. In Jeddah, Al-Balad old town and the corniche take a full day, and the Red Sea seafood is the reason to keep an evening free.

With 14 days, add Al-Ahsa early: the train from Riyadh is listed at about 4 hours, but confirm the current service and timing before you build the day around it (check). The palm oasis, souqs and caves fill two nights. Then continue to AlUla and Jeddah. Finish in Abha for the Asir mountains and Rijal Almaa, or trade Abha for the Red Sea coast if you would rather swim than hike.

This is the point where the trip stops being a city break and becomes a loop. Two internal flights are normal; three is manageable if you keep the last two nights fixed near your departure airport.

Three weeks lets you keep the 14-day loop and add either the north-west or the mountains. In winter, fly to Tabuk for Wadi Disah and the NEOM coast, two to three nights; some coastal access is still changing as development continues, so confirm current access locally before you book.

The alternative is Hail for the Jubbah and Shuwaymis rock art, one to two nights, which suits travellers who prefer archaeology to beaches. Both add at least one more domestic flight and a car or guide.

If you want a true 21 nights, keep the 14-day loop, add Tabuk 3 and Hail 2, and hold three flexible nights for flights, rest and weather. If you only have 17–19 nights, treat the same route as a flexible plan and drop a stop rather than compressing the days.

If your dates fall between May and September, invert the plan: base in Abha and Taif for the cool mountain air, and keep Riyadh and AlUla for a short winter trip later. Taif's rose farms and mountain roads sit above Makkah and pair well with a Jeddah arrival.

Fly between regions. Riyadh–AlUla and Riyadh–Jeddah are short hops, but the drive equivalents run 8–12 hours, so a car only makes sense for day trips and the north-west. Check the getting-around page for rail, bus and car-hire detail.

Budget in riyals and carry a card plus some cash for small vendors and tips. Winter is peak: AlUla hotels and Hegra tours are the two things that sell out first, so fix those dates before the rest of the loop.
