Summary by passport, month and cost
Saudi Arabia is a fly-between-regions country, not a road-trip one. The table below sets the three decisions that shape a trip: when you can enter, when the weather works, and what a day costs.
| Factor | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Passport and entry | GCC nationals enter with ID; most other nationalities use the eVisa or a visa on arrival if eligible |
| Tourist visa | Apply on the official portal before booking non-refundable flights |
| October–March | Best window for Riyadh, AlUla, Jeddah, Al-Ahsa, Tabuk, Hail |
| May–September | Hot on the coast and in Riyadh; Abha and Taif stay cool at altitude |
| Ramadan | Shorter opening hours and daytime eating rules; book dinner ahead |
| Daily costs | Mid-range hotel, meals and a car or driver: 2026 estimate, check current prices |
| Domestic flights | Riyadh–AlUla and Jeddah–AlUla are the two routes most trips need |
The places, in the order most trips use them
Start with Riyadh. Three to four nights covers the old centre — Masmak Fortress, Souq Al-Zal and the National Museum — plus At-Turaif in Diriyah from late afternoon into dinner. Keep one evening free for the Edge of the World escarpment, a half-day drive each way from the city.
Then pick one of two second bases. AlUla, 2–3 nights, is the Nabataean north-west: Hegra (Mada'in Salih), the Dadan and Jabal Ikmah inscriptions, the mud-brick old town and Elephant Rock, all inside a winter season with timed entry. Jeddah, 2–3 nights, is the Red Sea port: Al-Balad old town, the corniche and seafood. Many travellers fly into Riyadh and home out of Jeddah.
Add a third stop if you have 10 days or more. Al-Ahsa is a date-palm oasis with souqs and caves, about 4 hours by train from Riyadh. Tabuk opens the north-west coast, Wadi Disah and Jabal al-Lawz. Hail is the base for the Jubbah and Shuwaymis rock art. Abha, at 2,200 m in Asir, is the summer choice and the base for Rijal Almaa; Taif, above Makkah, has rose farms and cooler air from April to September.
Makkah is for Muslims only. Madinah's central area around the Prophet's Mosque is also restricted — check what visitors may enter before you plan a stop there.
| Place | Nights | Best months | Why go |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riyadh and Diriyah | 3–4 | Nov–Feb | Capital, At-Turaif, museums, Edge of the World day trip |
| AlUla and Hegra | 2–3 | Nov–Mar | Nabataean tombs, canyons, oasis old town |
| Jeddah | 2–3 | Nov–Mar | Al-Balad UNESCO old town, corniche, Red Sea seafood |
| Abha and Rijal Almaa | 2–3 | May–Sep | Green mountains and stone villages, cool in summer |
| Al-Ahsa | 1–2 | Nov–Feb | Palm oasis and caves, about 4 h by train from Riyadh |
| Taif | 1–2 | Apr–Sep | Rose farms and mountain air above Makkah |
| Tabuk and the NEOM coast | 2–3 | Nov–Mar | Wadi Disah and empty beaches |
| Hail | 1–2 | Nov–Feb | Jubbah and Shuwaymis rock art |
| Red Sea islands | 3 | Oct–May | Reefs and new resorts |
| Makkah | 1–2 | Year-round | Islam's holiest city; Muslims only |
| Madinah | 1–2 | Year-round | The Prophet's Mosque; central area restricted — check |
Notes before you book
Distances are the trap. Riyadh to AlUla is a long drive; fly it. Riyadh to Jeddah is a short flight or a long day on the road. Build one spare night into any trip that connects two regions, because flight changes are common in winter.
Dress and public-behaviour rules apply nationwide: modest clothing, no alcohol, and care with photographs of people and official sites. Follow local advice in Makkah and Madinah.
AlUla's winter season and Riyadh Season both sell out specific dates. Book accommodation and Hegra entry before you fix flights, and check whether your dates fall in Ramadan.
- Fly between regions; do not plan back-to-back long drives.
- Keep one spare night for flight changes.
- Book AlUla and Riyadh Season dates early.
- Check Ramadan dates against your plan.
- Carry travel insurance that covers the activities you book.
