Best day trips from Riga: how to get there and what to see

Distances are road kilometres from central Riga. Times are door-to-door for the fastest public transport option, plus the walk from the stop to the sight. Fares are 2026 estimates for a return trip.

Jūrmala is a 25 km strip of beach and pine forest west of Riga, and the simplest trip on this list: a direct train from Riga Central, roughly every 20–30 minutes, about 30 minutes to Majori. Buy a ticket for Majori or Dzintari, not the far end, and walk the rest.

The draw is the wooden villas along the streets behind the beach, the long sand strand, and the Dzintari concert hall area. The beach is the main event from June to August; outside summer it is a quiet walk with cafés open on weekends. Jomas iela in Majori is the spine for food and drink.

Go on a weekday morning if you want the beach to yourself. A half day is enough unless you are swimming; you can be back in Riga for a late lunch.

Sigulda is the strongest full-day trip from Riga: castles, a river valley, a cable car across the gorge and a bobsleigh track, all within walking distance of the station. Trains run from Riga Central in about 1 h 20 min.

The classic loop is Turaida Castle on one side of the valley, the cable car over the Gauja, and Sigulda's own castle ruins and manor on the other. Turaida is the bigger sight and needs two to three hours with the walk up. The cable car runs across the valley and is the fastest way to link the two sides.

You can pair Sigulda with Cēsis by train if you have a long day, but that is tight. Better to give Sigulda its own day and keep Cēsis for a second trip or an overnight.

Cēsis is a medieval castle town inside Gauja National Park, about 2 hours from Riga by train via Sigulda. The castle and its park are the reason to come; the old town is small and walkable. It works as a long day trip, but it is better with a night so you can also walk the Gauja trails.

Rundāle Palace is the baroque palace south of Riga, near Bauska. There is no train station at the palace: take a bus to Bauska and then a taxi or a long walk. That extra leg is why Rundāle is a full day rather than a half day, and why some travellers join a tour instead.

Jelgava is the closest palace option, 45 minutes by train, with Jelgava Palace and a flat, walkable centre. It is a half day, not a headline trip.

Ķemeri National Park has a boardwalk over raised bog, about 45 km from Riga. Take the train toward Ķemeri or Tukums and walk or take a local bus to the trailhead; the last stretch adds about 40 minutes on foot, so check the return train times before you set out.

The boardwalk is the point: flat, easy and open all year, with the best light in early morning and late afternoon. Wear shoes you do not mind getting muddy outside the boards, and bring water — there is little on the trail.

Kuldīga, Liepāja, Ventspils and Cape Kolka are all worth seeing, but none works as a day trip from Riga. Kuldīga is 2 h 30 min each way by bus, Liepāja about 3 h 30 min, and Cape Kolka needs a car. Doing them in a day means six to seven hours on the road or in a bus for two or three hours on the ground.

Treat Kurzeme as a two- or three-night loop with a car, or pick one town and stay a night. If you only have Riga plus one day, spend it on Sigulda, not on a long bus ride west.

Public transport is cheap and the sights are the main variable. Budget figures below are per person, 2026 estimates, and exclude food.

Buy train tickets at the station or on the operator app before boarding; regional trains are rarely full outside summer weekends, but the Riga–Jūrmala line fills on hot Saturdays.

Start early. Sigulda and Cēsis reward a 8–9am departure, and the light in the Gauja valley is better before the tour buses arrive. Jūrmala is the exception: go late morning and stay for sunset in summer.

Check the last return train before you leave Riga. On rural lines the last service can be early evening, and taxis back from Sigulda or Cēsis are expensive.

A car only pays off for Kurzeme or for Rundāle plus Bauska in one day. For Jūrmala, Sigulda, Cēsis and Jelgava, the train is faster and cheaper than parking in Riga.
