Weather by region
Latvia is small but the coast and the inland east behave differently. Riga and the Gulf coast (Riga, Jūrmala, Saulkrasti) run about −3 °C in winter, damp and grey, and 20–24 °C in summer with light until about 23:00 in June. Kurzeme and the open Baltic (Liepāja, Ventspils, Kuldīga, Cape Kolka) are windier with milder winters and a cooler late spring; the sea only warms from late June. Inland east (Sigulda, Cēsis, Daugavpils, Rēzekne) has colder, snowier winters and warmer summers, and the Gauja valley colours peak late September to early October.
If you want a beach, aim for late June to mid-August and accept that the Baltic is bracing even then. If you want walking and castles, May, June and September are the sweet spots. If you want a city break, Riga works in every month, but December and the summer weekends are when it is at its best.
Cost and crowds by season
Latvia's high season is short: roughly mid-June to mid-August, plus the Christmas market weeks in December. Outside those windows, hotel rates in Riga drop noticeably and you can often book a few days ahead. Midsummer (23–24 June) is the exception in the other direction: locals travel, many businesses close, and countryside accommodation fills early.
Shoulder months (May, September, October) give the best balance: mild enough for the Gauja valley and the coast, medium prices, and no need to queue for the main sights. Winter (January–March) is the cheapest time for a Riga city break, but daylight is short and outdoor sights such as the Jūrmala beach or Sigulda's trails are limited. Events that change your plans
A few dates genuinely change what is open and what you can do. Līgo and Jāņi on 23–24 June is the biggest holiday of the year: people leave for the countryside, bonfires and caraway cheese, and many businesses close. Spend it in the countryside or plan around it. 4 May (Restoration of Independence Day) brings events in Riga and a public holiday, moved to Monday when it falls at a weekend. 18 November (Proclamation Day) brings fireworks over the Daugava, with a parade on 11 November and a candle wall along Riga Castle. Christmas markets run in the Dome and Esplanade squares, with closures on 24–26 December. Easter falls late March in 2027.

How to choose your dates
Start with what you actually want to do. Beaches and long evenings: late June to mid-August, booked early. Castles, forests and walking: May, June or September. A cheap city break with museums, opera and markets: January to March, or December for the markets. Autumn colour in the Gauja valley: late September to early October.
