Latvia itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks

Latvia is small: Riga is the hub, and one region per extra few days is the right pace. The table below is the short version; the sections after it explain each route and the transport that makes it work.

Four nights in Riga gives you the Old Town, the Art Nouveau streets around Alberta iela, the Central Market and one museum without rushing. Use two of the days for trips: Jūrmala by train (about 30 minutes) for the beach and wooden villas, and Rundāle Palace as a day trip (bus or car; the palace is near Bauska, so check seasonal opening before you go).

Then move to Cēsis or Sigulda for two nights. The two towns sit in the Gauja valley and are linked by train, so you can see Turaida Castle, Cēsis Castle and the cable car without a car. Sigulda is the easier base if you want the bobsleigh track and the cable car; Cēsis is quieter and has the better old town for an evening. Return to Riga by train on the last morning.

If you have only 7 days and no car, this is the itinerary to take. It uses the two rail corridors that actually work well for visitors and leaves out Kurzeme, which is the part that punishes you without a vehicle.

Kurzeme is the western region: Kuldīga with its UNESCO old town and the Venta Rapid, Liepāja with the Karosta naval base and its beach, and Ventspils further north. The parent country facts are clear that a car helps here, and it does: buses reach Kuldīga and Liepāja, but the coast between them, Slītere and Cape Kolka are slow without your own wheels.

A workable shape is Riga 4 nights, Cēsis 2, Kuldīga 2, Liepāja 1, then back to Riga. Kuldīga is the highlight for most people; Liepāja rewards a full day if you want Karosta and the music scene. If you are relying on buses, cut Liepāja and give Kuldīga the extra night, or take the train to Liepāja and skip the coast road.

Rent the car in Riga and drop it in Riga; one-way fees between the Baltic countries can be high. Driving times are short by North American standards — Riga to Kuldīga is roughly two hours, Kuldīga to Liepāja about one — but secondary roads are slow and wildlife on the road at dusk is a real hazard.

With two weeks, Latvia works best as the middle of a Tallinn–Riga–Vilnius trip. Buses link each leg and are usually the cheapest option; the parent country facts suggest flying home from Vilnius or Riga, which avoids backtracking. Tallinn to Riga is a long bus ride, Riga to Vilnius similar; both are comfortable and bookable online.

Inside Latvia, keep the 7-day Riga and Gauja plan and add Kuldīga for one or two nights on the way south, or as a loop back to Riga. If you are driving, the route Tallinn → Riga → Sigulda → Kuldīga → Vilnius is a clean line with no wasted kilometres.

Two weeks also lets you slow down: a full day in Sigulda for the Gauja, a full day in Kuldīga, and an unhurried Riga. Do not try to add Daugavpils and the far east on the same trip unless you are driving and have three weeks.

Three weeks lets you cover the parts the 14-day line skips: the Kurzeme coast up to Cape Kolka and Slītere, Vidzeme beyond Cēsis, and Daugavpils in the east with the Rothko Art Centre in the fortress. This is a driving itinerary. Public transport reaches the towns, but the coast and the east are where a car changes the trip.

A sensible split is Riga 4 nights, Gauja 3, Kurzeme coast 4 (Kuldīga, Liepāja, Ventspils, Cape Kolka), back through Riga, then Vidzeme 3 and Daugavpils 2, with the rest as travel days. Add Jelgava Palace and Tukums on the way if you are passing rather than making a special trip.

Three weeks in Latvia alone is generous. Most travellers use the extra days for Tallinn, Vilnius or the Lithuanian coast, and treat Latvia as the central block. Either way, book Midsummer and December in Riga well ahead.

Transport is the constraint, not distance. Trains are good on the Riga–Jūrmala, Riga–Sigulda–Cēsis, Riga–Jelgava and Riga–Liepāja lines; buses fill the gaps. Money and rules are simple: Latvia uses the euro, cards work almost everywhere, and tipping is modest. Weather decides the season. May to September is the window for the coast and the Gauja; December is for Riga's Christmas market. Outside those months, expect short daylight and some seasonal closures at smaller sights — always check opening times before a long trip out.
