Liepāja is Latvia's third city, 220 km west of Riga on the Baltic, split between a low wooden centre with a wide white beach and Karosta, the former secret Soviet naval town 10 km north. It has no old town and no airport route; you come by bus or the once-daily train and stay one or two nights. Wind is constant, the sea is cold even in August, and Karosta is the reason to make the trip.

Getting around

One tram line links the station area, centre and Jaunliepāja, 05:00–00:00. Buses 1, 3, 4, 7 and 8 run centre–Karosta (bus 3 about 35 min, 10 km). Buy tickets in kiosks (about €0.90) or from the driver (about €1.50) and validate them; a one-day pass is about €3. Taxis and Bolt cover the 00:30–05:00 gap.

Watch out

Safety

A calm, walkable city; the real issues are the cold sea, wind, unlit Karosta blocks after dark and the early-morning return train. Standard big-city care in the centre.
  • Karosta is a lived-in district, not a museum: photograph buildings, not people, and skip empty blocks after dark.
  • The Kalpaka bridge to Karosta opens for ships; check the posted times or take bus 22, which detours.
  • The Baltic is cold and the wind constant: a warm layer even in July.
  • Some Karosta sights and the Northern Forts run on guided tours only: book ahead or you may find gates locked.
  • The return train to Riga leaves around 05:00; most travellers take the bus instead.
