Best time to visit Riga: weather, crowds and events by month

Riga's season is short and sharply priced. From late May the city turns green and outdoor terraces fill; June gives the longest days, with light until about 23:00, but it is high season for crowds and prices. July and August stay warm at 20–24 °C and are the busiest and most expensive months, with the Old Town and Jūrmala beach both full. September is the quiet sweet spot: mild, cheaper, and the Gauja valley colours start from late September.

Winter is a different trip. December brings Christmas markets in Dome Square and the Esplanade, and hotel rates stay moderate. January to March is the cheapest and quietest stretch, around −3 °C, damp and grey, with short days — good for museums, spas and cafés rather than sightseeing. November is dark and wet but carries national holidays on 11 and 18 November.

Riga sits on the Gulf of Riga, so the climate is coastal: damp, changeable and windier than inland. Summer highs sit around 20–24 °C, but rain can arrive any day and evenings cool quickly — pack a light waterproof and a layer. Winter hovers near −3 °C with grey skies and slush on the pavements rather than reliable snow.

Daylight swings hard. June evenings stay bright until about 23:00, which makes late dinners and riverside walks easy. December is the opposite: it gets dark in the mid-afternoon, so plan indoor stops — museums, the Central Market, cafés — and treat any clear hour as your sightseeing window.

Riga is a city-break destination, so demand concentrates in the June–August window and around holidays. Old Town hotel rates climb in July and August and drop in January–March and November. If your dates are flexible, shifting a trip from August to early September usually cuts the price (check current rates).

Līgo and Jāņi on 23–24 June is the one date to plan around rather than book into: it is Latvia's biggest holiday, many businesses close, and locals head for the countryside. Midsummer in Riga can feel unusually empty — fine if you want quiet streets, less so if you want restaurants and tours running normally.

December's Christmas markets are the strongest reason to choose winter: stalls in Dome Square and the Esplanade, mulled wine, and opera and concert season running through the winter months. August brings the Riga City Festival with concerts and street events, and 18 November brings fireworks over the Daugava plus a candle wall along Riga Castle, with a parade on 11 November.

Spring and autumn events move around, so confirm dates before you commit: the Riga light festival has recently fallen in November, and summer music festivals return only in some years. The national tourism board and the city's own listings are the places to check.

Prices below are 2026 estimates for a mid-range traveller and swing with the season; treat them as bands, not quotes, and verify current fares and ticket prices before booking. Flights and Old Town hotels are the two costs that move most between low and high season.

Riga itself is inexpensive once you are there: public transport, the Central Market and everyday restaurants stay cheap year-round, so the season mainly changes your accommodation and airfare.

Book late May or early September if you want the best balance of weather, price and space. If you are coming for the Christmas markets, aim for the first half of December, before the 24–26 December closures, and check the market schedule and whether your hotel restaurant is open over the holidays.

Build in a wet-day plan whichever month you choose: the Central Market, the Art Nouveau district and the museums all work in rain. And if you are combining Riga with the coast or the Gauja valley, remember the sea only warms from late June and Sigulda's colours peak at the end of September.
