Sigulda is a small Gauja valley town 50 km east of Riga, at the edge of Gauja National Park. Three castles, a cave, a cable car and a bobsleigh track sit within a 10 km walk. Most travellers come as a day trip from Riga; one night lets you do the full valley loop without rushing the last train.

Getting around

Everything in the centre is walkable; the classic loop (Sigulda castle – cable car – Krimulda – Gutmanis Cave – Turaida) is about 10 km on foot. A local bus runs to Turaida and Krimulda every day, 10–15 min. Trains and buses from Riga take about 1 h 15 min.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a small resort town; the real risks are icy valley paths in winter, fast cyclists on shared trails and unlit forest sections after dark. Emergency number 112.
  • Summer weekend traffic jams on the road from Riga: the train is often faster.
  • Some valley paths are icy or unplowed in winter; check conditions before a long walk.
  • Turaida village has almost no lunch options beyond a shop hot dog; eat in Sigulda centre or carry food.
  • Cable car, bungee and zipline run on limited hours and can close in wind: check before you go.
