Folsom

Give Folsom one full day plus a lake afternoon: historic Sutter Street, the prison museum and the powerhouse, then decide on a second night for Folsom Lake.

Folsom is a Sacramento suburb with a real historic core, a state prison that gave Johnny Cash a song, and a reservoir 10 minutes north. Most visitors come for a day from Sacramento on the Gold Line light rail; a car unlocks the lake and the outlet mall. Two nights is the useful maximum.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Sacramento Regional Transit's Gold light rail line runs from Historic Folsom station (Sutter and Reading) to downtown Sacramento roughly every 30 min. Folsom Stage Line buses cover the city; reloadable passes are sold at city hall. A car is the practical choice for Folsom Lake, the outlet mall and the prison museum.

Watch out

Safety

Folsom is a low-crime suburb and safe for tourists by day and evening. The real risks are summer heat, fast traffic on US-50 and the river below the dam, which runs cold and strong.
  • Prison tours are not offered; only the museum is open to the public.
  • Summer afternoons regularly pass 38 °C (100 °F) — do the historic district early and the lake late.
  • Light rail to Sacramento stops running in the evening; check the last train before you commit to a night out downtown.
  • Folsom Lake levels swing hard between drought and wet years: check before you plan a beach day.
