Folsom
Give Folsom one full day plus a lake afternoon: historic Sutter Street, the prison museum and the powerhouse, then decide on a second night for Folsom Lake.
Folsom is a Sacramento suburb with a real historic core, a state prison that gave Johnny Cash a song, and a reservoir 10 minutes north. Most visitors come for a day from Sacramento on the Gold Line light rail; a car unlocks the lake and the outlet mall. Two nights is the useful maximum.

- Measurements are imperial: miles, Fahrenheit, gallons, pounds. 100 km ≈ 62 miles; 30 °C ≈ 86 °F.
- Small talk with strangers is normal and friendly; it is not a sales tactic.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Prison tours are not offered; only the museum is open to the public.
- Summer afternoons regularly pass 38 °C — do the historic district early and the lake late.
- Light rail to Sacramento stops running in the evening; check the last train before you commit to a night out downtown.
- Folsom Lake levels swing hard between drought and wet years: check before you plan a beach day.
Folsom is a low-crime suburb and safe for tourists by day and evening. The real risks are summer heat, fast traffic on US-50 and the river below the dam, which runs cold and strong.
