Gold Country is a 300 km string of Gold Rush towns along Highway 49 in the western Sierra Nevada foothills, east of Sacramento. There is no north-south highway and no rail link between them, so a car is required and every move is a drive. Sleep in one town for the northern half (Nevada City, Grass Valley, Auburn) or the southern half (Sonora, Murphys, Jackson), and day-trip the rest. Two nights covers one cluster; four nights covers both.
