Lake Tahoe is one lake with two states and two different trips. The south shore (South Lake Tahoe, Stateline) is the busy side: casinos, Heavenly, most beds and the easiest bus links. The north and west (Tahoe City, Truckee, Incline Village, Homewood, Olympic Valley) is quieter, cheaper on some dates and closer to the ski resorts off I-80. Driving the 72-mile (116 km) loop takes about 2 hours without stops, but summer and ski-season traffic can double that. Pick one base and day-trip the rest.
