The Shasta Cascades fill California's northeast corner: volcano country running from Mount Shasta and the Trinity Alps up through Lassen to the Modoc plateau. Towns are 45–150 minutes apart on I-5 and CA-299, buses run a few times a week at best, and the big sights sit at the end of forest roads. Sleep in Redding for services and airport access, in Mount Shasta or Weed for the mountain and the Siskiyous, in Chester or Susanville for Lassen. Three nights covers Mount Shasta plus one park; five nights adds the Trinity Alps or Lava Beds.
