Iași

Give Iași 1–2 nights: Palace of Culture, the church cluster on Ștefan cel Mare and Copou hill fit one full day on foot.

Iași is Romania's second city by cultural weight and the old capital of Moldavia, in the northeast near the Moldova border. Sights sit close together in the centre, so one full day covers the core and a second day adds Copou hill, museums and a Chișinău hop. It is a student city, walkable and cheap, with a short spring and autumn window.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
  • Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
  • Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
  • Romania ↗Romania is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Romanian sources for your passport.
  • Romania ↗Drivers need an electronic road vignette (rovinieta) on national roads; rental cars normally include it, but check.
  • Romania ↗Brown bears live in the Carpathians and sometimes enter towns and roadsides: never feed or approach them, and follow local warnings.

Getting around

The centre is compact and best on foot. Trams and buses run about 05:00–23:00, less often at weekends; buy tickets at kiosks or machines. Taxis are metered and cheap — check the meter is running.

Watch out

Safety

Iași is a safe, walkable city; the real risks are winter cold, unlit side streets at night and taxis that skip the meter. Use 112 for any emergency.
  • Winter is genuinely cold: pack for –20°C (68°F) in Jan–Feb.
  • Some taxi drivers may not start the meter; agree the fare or check the device.
  • Minor ticket kiosks close around 17:00–18:00; use machines instead.
  • Many museum signs are Romanian-only.
