Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
  • Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
  • Belgium ↗Belgium is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Belgian sources for your passport.
  • Belgium ↗Cities have different names in Dutch and French (Antwerpen/Anvers, Gent/Gand, Brugge/Bruges, Luik/Liège); check both on tickets and signs.
  • Belgium ↗Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent have low-emission zones; if you drive, check that the car is registered or allowed before entering.
  • Belgium ↗Belgian unions call national action days that stop trains, trams and flights; check SNCB and your airline two days before any travel day.

Charleroi is Belgium's fifth-largest city and the country's biggest low-cost airport gateway, but most travellers pass straight through. The city itself has two genuinely strong sights — the Museum of Photography and the former coal mine at Bois du Cazier — plus a compact, walkable centre. One night is enough for most trips; two if you want the museums without rushing.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable within the Petite Ceinture ring road. TEC runs a light metro (M1–M4) and buses; the metro does not reach the airport or the two main museums. Buses 70/71/170/173 go to the Museum of Photography, bus 52 to Bois du Cazier, both from Charleroi-Central in under 15 min. Bolt e-bikes and e-scooters are available.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

City centre (Ville Haute / Ville Basse)

Walkable to Place Charles II, the Sambre quays and Charleroi-Central station; best for a one-night stop.

Near Charleroi-Central station

Convenient for early trains and the airport bus; the area around the station is functional rather than lively.

Watch out

Safety

Charleroi has a rough reputation, but the main sights and centre are fine in daylight. Keep to lit streets after dark, watch bags around Charleroi-Central, and avoid wandering the station area late at night.
  • Some central areas around the station feel run-down, especially after dark; stick to lit main streets.
  • The metro does not connect to the airport — allow time for the TEC bus A1.
  • Bois du Cazier and the Museum of Photography are closed on Mondays.
  • Museum of Photography is closed Mondays; Bois du Cazier closed Mondays.

  2. 1 airport and 2 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for CRL: last TEC A1 departures, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Walking clusters with rescue anchors: Place Charles II, the Sambre quays, Charleroi-Central.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Museum of Photography, Bois du Cazier, BPS22) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Hostile arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
