Louvain-la-Neuve

Give Louvain-la-Neuve half a day to one night: the Hergé Museum and Musée L, then move on. It is a 1969 university town, not a historic city.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
  • Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
  • Belgium ↗Belgium is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Belgian sources for your passport.
  • Belgium ↗Cities have different names in Dutch and French (Antwerpen/Anvers, Gent/Gand, Brugge/Bruges, Luik/Liège); check both on tickets and signs.
  • Belgium ↗Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent have low-emission zones; if you drive, check that the car is registered or allowed before entering.
  • Belgium ↗Belgian unions call national action days that stop trains, trams and flights; check SNCB and your airline two days before any travel day.

Louvain-la-Neuve (LLN) was built from scratch in 1969 for the French-speaking half of the Catholic University of Louvain, and it still looks like it: concrete, pedestrian, and full of students. There is no old town. What there is: Belgium's largest university museum, the official Hergé Museum, and a car-free centre where everything is within a 20-minute walk. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop from Brussels or as a base for Waterloo and Villers-la-Ville.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is pedestrian and motor traffic runs underground, so you walk everywhere: 20 minutes end to end. Covered paths help in rain. Trains run from Louvain-la-Neuve station to Ottignies in about 7 minutes, where you change for Brussels, Namur, Liège, Charleroi, Dinant and Leuven. Local TEC buses link the neighbouring towns. Expect to get lost once: the layout repeats and looks alike.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Waterloo

go

Door to door: About 45–60 min

Train to Ottignies, then TEC bus or a short taxi; by car 20 min

The battlefield site and the Lion Mound; half a day is enough.

Villers-la-Ville

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Train to Ottignies, then TEC bus toward Villers-la-Ville

Cistercian abbey ruins; check seasonal opening before you go.

Door to door: About 1 h–1 h 15 min

Shuttle train to Ottignies, then the Brussels line; a direct university bus also runs to Woluwe

Faster and simpler than driving into the city.

Leuvencaution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Train via Ottignies, change at Brussels or Leuven

Doable, but the two towns are often confused: check the destination on the ticket.

Walibi Belgium

go

Door to door: About 20–40 min

Car about 10 min; train plus bus takes longer

Belgium's biggest theme park; check the 2026 calendar for opening days.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Centre

Everything walkable, but student noise in term time; the only real hotel cluster is here and at Lauzelle.

Lauzelle

Quieter, residential, next to the Bois de Lauzelle; 15–20 min walk to the centre.

Ottignies

Next town, on the main Brussels–Luxembourg line; more trains, cheaper beds, 7 min by shuttle train.

Watch out

Safety

A safe, small university town; the real risks are student drinking nights, bicycles on the pedestrian paths, and quiet empty streets in July and August.
  • The town is not Leuven. Leuven (Louvain in French) is a different city in Flanders, 30 km away.
  • In July and August the student population leaves and much of the centre feels empty; some bars and eateries close.
  • The 24h Vélo in October brings 50,000 (≈ US$60,000) students and heavy drinking: book beds early or avoid the date.
  • Most theatre and student events are in French only.
