Leuven is a university city of about 98,000 people and the capital of Flemish Brabant, 20 km east of Brussels. The Gothic town hall, St Peter's Church and the Groot Begijnhof sit within a 15-minute walk of each other, and the Oude Markt fills with students in term time. Most visitors see it as a day trip from Brussels; a night buys you the evening bar scene and a calmer morning.

Getting around
The centre is compact and car-free in parts: walk from the station down Bondgenotenlaan to the Grote Markt in about 15 min. De Lijn buses cover the ring and the suburbs (Heverlee, Meerdaalwoud, Gasthuisberg); there is no tram or metro. Bikes are the local default and rentable near the centre; lock to a fixed object or it will be taken.

Watch out
Safety
- Speed cameras on the ring road are strict; the limit is 50 km/h, or 30 km/h inside the ring.
- Don't hunt for free street parking in the centre: use the signed car parks on the ring road.
- One-way streets are open to bikes both ways, but police do run controls.
