Give Leuven one full day, or a night if you want the Oude Markt after dark: the old centre is small and walkable, and it is 20 min by train from Brussels.
Leuven is a university city of about 98,000 people and the capital of Flemish Brabant, 20 km east of Brussels. The Gothic town hall, St Peter's Church and the Groot Begijnhof sit within a 15-minute walk of each other, and the Oude Markt fills with students in term time. Most visitors see it as a day trip from Brussels; a night buys you the evening bar scene and a calmer morning.

Get around
The centre is compact and car-free in parts: walk from the station down Bondgenotenlaan to the Grote Markt in about 15 min. De Lijn buses cover the ring and the suburbs (Heverlee, Meerdaalwoud, Gasthuisberg); there is no tram or metro. Bikes are the local default and rentable near the centre; lock to a fixed object or it will be taken.

- Summer is quiet: many students leave, so some bars and lunch spots cut hours.
Leuven is a low-risk city; the real annoyances are bike theft, pickpockets on the Oude Markt at closing time and unlit towpaths along the Dijle after dark.
