Maydena

Go only if you ride the pedal railway or use it as a bed for Mount Field: one night, own car, no public transport, no shops after 15:00.

Maydena is a small Derwent Valley town on the Gordon River Road, about 75–90 minutes by car from Hobart and 45 minutes from New Norfolk. It has no public transport and a tiny commercial strip, so it works as a base for Mount Field National Park and the Maydena Bike Park pedal railway, not as a stand-alone destination. One night is enough unless you are riding.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Car only. There is no bus, train or taxi service; the Gordon River Road (B61) is the single access road from New Norfolk. Fuel up in New Norfolk or at National Park before arriving, and treat the road west of Maydena as remote: no phone coverage in stretches, wildlife on the road at dusk.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 15 min

Car east on the Gordon River Road (B61), about 12 min

Russell Falls walk is short and sealed; the higher walks need proper boots and a park pass.

New Norfolk

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Car east on the B61, about 45 min

Your nearest supermarket, fuel and pharmacy; do the run before you settle in.

Strathgordon and Lake Pedder

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Car west on the Gordon River Road, about 60 min (about 72 km (45 mi))

Remote road with no services; check conditions and fuel before going.

Door to door: 1.5 h

Car via New Norfolk and the Brooker Highway, 75–90 min

Fine as an arrival or departure leg, not as a day return on top of a ride.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are the drive (wildlife at dusk, ice and snow in winter, no phone coverage), cold wet weather any month, and having no fuel or food because you arrived after the store shut.
  • No public transport of any kind: without a car you are stuck.
  • Fuel, groceries and opening hours are limited; the café/general store runs about 09:00–15:00, Thursday to Tuesday.
  • Snow, ice and fallen trees can close the Gordon River Road in winter.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy and drops out west of town.
  • Distances to the next services are long: New Norfolk is about 45 minutes away.
