Maydena
Go only if you ride the pedal railway or use it as a bed for Mount Field: one night, own car, no public transport, no shops after 15:00.
Maydena is a small Derwent Valley town on the Gordon River Road, about 75–90 minutes by car from Hobart and 45 minutes from New Norfolk. It has no public transport and a tiny commercial strip, so it works as a base for Mount Field National Park and the Maydena Bike Park pedal railway, not as a stand-alone destination. One night is enough unless you are riding.

Get around
Car only. There is no bus, train or taxi service; the Gordon River Road (B61) is the single access road from New Norfolk. Fuel up in New Norfolk or at National Park before arriving, and treat the road west of Maydena as remote: no phone coverage in stretches, wildlife on the road at dusk.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport of any kind: without a car you are stuck.
- Fuel, groceries and opening hours are limited; the café/general store runs about 09:00–15:00, Thursday to Tuesday.
- Snow, ice and fallen trees can close the Gordon River Road in winter.
- Mobile coverage is patchy and drops out west of town.
- Distances to the next services are long: New Norfolk is about 45 minutes away.
Very low crime; the real risks are the drive (wildlife at dusk, ice and snow in winter, no phone coverage), cold wet weather any month, and having no fuel or food because you arrived after the store shut.
