New Norfolk

Give New Norfolk one night, or a half-day stop on the drive between Hobart and Mount Field: the town itself is 2–3 hours on foot.

New Norfolk sits on the River Derwent 35 km north-west of Hobart, at the edge of the Derwent Valley and the gateway to Mount Field National Park. It is a heritage town of old houses, hop-growing history and the Willow Court asylum site, with autumn colour in April and May. Most travellers see it in a few hours, or sleep one night before or after the national park.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

The town is small and flat enough to walk: High Street, the river esplanade and Willow Court are all within about 20 minutes on foot. A car is the practical way to reach Mount Field, the wineries and the rest of the Derwent Valley; buses to Hobart run but are infrequent.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 45 min

Drive B62 west from New Norfolk, about 40 min to the visitor centre

Russell Falls is a short, easy walk from the car park; the higher walks need a full day and warm layers.

Door to door: 35–50 min

Drive the A10 or B10, about 35 min; buses run but are infrequent

Easy as a half-day for MONA or the waterfront, then back for the night.

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Drive the B61 and B62 west through the valley, about 1 h 15 min

Mountain-bike park and forest country; a long return day, better as an overnight.

Door to door: About 45 min

Drive via the A10 and B31, about 45 min

Historic village with a convict bridge; pairs well with a Hobart day.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet town and generally safe to walk by day and early evening. The real risks are wildlife on the roads at dusk, cold and wet weather on valley walks, and thin mobile coverage once you head up the valley.
  • Public transport in the valley is thin: without a car you are tied to a few daily services.
  • Mount Field's higher walks can see snow and road closures outside summer: check conditions before you drive up.
  • Many shops and cafés close on Sundays and public holidays; plan food around that.
  • Fuel up in New Norfolk before heading further up the valley.
