Greater Hobart is the capital plus the commuter towns around the Derwent estuary and D'Entrecasteaux Channel: Glenorchy and Moonah to the north, Richmond inland, Kingston and Margate south, and Bruny Island offshore. The towns are 20–45 minutes from the city by car, so a single Hobart base covers almost everything; only Bruny rewards an overnight. Buses exist but thin out fast outside Hobart and Kingston, so a car buys you the region.
