Western Tasmania is the island's wet, wild quarter: the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, old mining towns and the Gordon River. Distances are short on the map and long on the road — Queenstown to Strahan is about 40 minutes, but Burnie to Queenstown is roughly 3 hours of tight bends. Sleep on the west coast rather than driving it as a day trip from Hobart or Launceston.

West coast (Strahan, Queenstown): Rain falls year-round; summer days are mild, winter days cold and short. Wind on the harbour can cancel small-boat trips.
