Gyeongsan경산

Skip as a base: Gyeongsan is a Daegu suburb. Use it for a half-day (Gatbawi hike, Nammaeji pond) or sleep here only if Daegu beds are full.

Gyeongsan sits 13 km east of Daegu and works as a satellite city, not a destination in its own right. Its draw is Palgongsan's Gatbawi stone Buddha, two ponds, a Silla-era temple and a campus-town food scene around Yeungnam University. Most travellers see it as a half-day from Daegu or a cheaper bed with Line 2 subway access into the city.

  • East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
  • East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
  • South Korea ↗Check K-ETA and visa status on the official sites before you fly; the list of nationalities exempted from registering online changes year by year.
  • South Korea ↗Google Maps gives poor walking and driving directions in Korea; use Naver Map or Kakao Map for routes.

Getting around

Daegu Metro Line 2 runs through southern Gyeongsan (Jeongpyeong, Imdang, Yeungnam Univ.) and Line 1 ends at Hayang in the north. Local buses (100, 399, 509, 911, 918, 990 and village routes) link the districts; taxis meter from about ₩4,500 for the first 2 km. The city-run bike share stopped around 2022, so use app-based private bikes where available.

Daegu

go

Door to door: About 30–45 min

Daegu Metro Line 2 from Yeungnam Univ. or Imdang, or KTX/ITX from Gyeongsan Station

The obvious pairing: Gyeongsan is a Daegu suburb, so treat the city as the day out.

Gyeongju

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Intercity bus from Gyeongsan Intercity Bus Terminal, several a day

Fare roughly ₩6,000 (2026 estimate); check times at the terminal.

Pohang

go

Door to door: About 1–1.5 h

KTX or ITX from Gyeongsan Station on the Gyeongbu/Daegyeong lines, or intercity bus

East-coast port with beaches and seafood; doable as a long day.

Gimcheon

caution

Door to door: About 40–50 min

KTX from Gyeongsan Station northbound

Fine as a rail hop, thin as a day out; check what you want to see first.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Gyeongsan Station area

KTX and Korail stop, intercity bus terminal 5 min away; best for one night with bags and an early train.

Yeungnam University district

Campus town about 2 km (1.2 mi) south of the station: cafés, guesthouses and nightlife, on Daegu Metro Line 2.

Hayang-eup

Northern Gyeongsan, terminus of Daegu Metro Line 1 (opened Dec 2024); quiet, cheaper, further from the sights.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe by international standards; the real risks are the Gatbawi climb, summer heat and rain, and unlit rural roads if you cycle at night.
  • Sights are spread across a north–south strip: without a bus or taxi, walking between them is slow.
  • Gatbawi is a steep uphill hike from the road; start early and carry water.
  • No city-run public bike share since about 2022; app bikes only where stocked.
  • Summer is a basin climate: 30 °C (86 °F) highs with heavy July–August rain.

  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Gyeongsan Station, Yeungnam University, Namsan-myeon ponds, Palgongsan trailheads.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Bulgulsa, Samseonghyeon museum, Gyeongsan Municipal Museum, Gatbawi) and eat pages with last orders.
