Great Cumbrae is a small Firth of Clyde island off Ayrshire, with Millport as its only town. It is a low-key seaside resort: a bay beach, a tiny cathedral, a painted crocodile rock and an 11-mile flat loop road. Most people come from Largs for a day; one night lets you ride the loop and eat on the seafront without watching the ferry clock.

Getting around

The island is 11 miles around on quiet, level B-roads: walk, hire a bike in Millport or drive. Bus 320 shuttles between Cumbrae Slip and Millport every 30 min, about 10 min. Bring or hire what you need in Millport; there is no supermarket on the island.

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are weather, fast-changing ferry sailings and the lack of a supermarket or reliable mobile signal.
  • No supermarket on the island: buy food in Largs or eat out.
  • Mobile data is patchy: EE has 5G, Three is patchy, O2 and Vodafone have no signal. Finish calls in Largs.
  • Robertson Museum and Aquarium is closed for reconstruction: check before you plan around it.
