Argyll and Bute is Scotland's west coast fjord country: sea lochs cut the land into peninsulas, so the roads wind and double back and a 40-mile gap can take two hours. This page covers the mainland plus the islands reached by a short ferry hop (Bute, Gigha, Seil, Luing, Easdale, Kerrera); Lismore and the longer crossings — Mull, Islay, Jura, Tiree, Coll, Colonsay — belong to the Inner Hebrides. Argyll and Bute plus the Inner Hebrides in three days is mostly ferry queues and single-track driving.

Argyll coast and islands: Winters are mild and snow on the roads is uncommon; rain arrives in any month, so pack for a change in the weather. May–September is the walking and ferry season, with long daylight in June and July.

School holidays in July and August fill Bute and Oban beds and ferry vehicle decks; late May–June and September are quieter with similar light.
