Millport, Cumbrae
Go for one full day, or one night if you want the island loop by bike: ferry from Largs is 10 min, £4.60 adult return, no booking.
Great Cumbrae is a small Firth of Clyde island off Ayrshire, with Millport as its only town. It is a low-key seaside resort: a bay beach, a tiny cathedral, a painted crocodile rock and an 11-mile flat loop road. Most people come from Largs for a day; one night lets you ride the loop and eat on the seafront without watching the ferry clock.

Etiquette, safety and scams

- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No supermarket on the island: buy food in Largs or eat out.
- Mobile data is patchy: EE has 5G, Three is patchy, O2 and Vodafone have no signal. Finish calls in Largs.
- Robertson Museum and Aquarium is closed for reconstruction: check before you plan around it.
- Ferries can be disrupted by wind; keep a buffer if you have a train or flight to catch.
Very low crime; the real risks are weather, fast-changing ferry sailings and the lack of a supermarket or reliable mobile signal.
