Kutná Hora

Go as a day trip from Prague (about 1 h by train) or one night; see the ossuary and St Barbara's, then leave. Two nights only if you add Sedlec and the mines.

Kutná Hora is a former silver-mining town 1 hour from Prague, protected by UNESCO for its historic centre, the Church of St Barbara and the Cathedral of Our Lady at Sedlec. The two headline sights sit at opposite ends of town, so most visitors do it as a day trip; one night lets you see it without the tour buses.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Czech Republic ↗Czechia is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Czech Republic ↗The currency is the Czech koruna (CZK), not the euro: decline dynamic currency conversion and avoid street exchange booths.
  • Czech Republic ↗Motorways need an electronic vignette bought before you drive on them.

Getting around

The town is about 3 km end to end and walkable, but the ossuary and St Barbara's are at opposite ends. Local bus 1 links the centre and the main station; a private tourist shuttle runs between the main station, the ossuary and St Barbara's. Taxis meet most trains and are metered.

Watch out

Safety

Kutná Hora is a small, low-crime town and safe to walk by day. The real risks are uneven cobbles, the dark walk between the two sights after dusk, and pickpockets on the crowded Prague train.
  • The ossuary and St Barbara's are about 2.5–3 km (1.6–1.9 mi) apart: plan the walk or take the shuttle.
  • Photography inside the ossuary is prohibited.
  • The silver-mine tours close in winter (roughly November–March) and on Mondays.
  • Kutná Hora hl.n. is well outside town; Kutná Hora město is the station near the centre.
  • Buy your return train ticket at the station office: there are no stamping machines in Kutná Hora.

  2. Walking clusters with rescue anchors: Sedlec (ossuary, cathedral), the historic centre (St Barbara's, Italian Court, Hrádek).
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (ossuary, St Barbara's, Sedlec cathedral, Hrádek mine tours) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Seasonal fixtures for the mine closure and shorter winter hours so gates A–D can go green.
