Varkala is a laterite cliff above the Arabian Sea, about 50 km north of Thiruvananthapuram, with a walkable clifftop strip of cafés, yoga schools and ayurvedic clinics above Papanasam Beach. It is a pilgrim town as well as a beach town: the Janardhana Swamy temple and the Sivagiri Mutt draw visitors year-round. The season runs December to March; outside it, many cliff businesses close and the pace drops.

Getting around

The cliff strip is walkable end to end in about 20–30 minutes. Autos link the railway station and town to the cliff (₹80–150, agree the fare first). Scooters rent locally for day trips; the state highway north to Kappil and Kollam is the main road.

Watch out

Safety

Varkala is a relaxed beach town and violent crime against visitors is rare. The real risks are the sea (strong currents, no lifeguards), unlit cliff edges at night, monsoon surf, and overpriced or unregistered ayurveda and massage places — agree the price and check credentials first.
  • The sea has strong currents and a steep drop-off at Papanasam; there are no lifeguards on most stretches — swim where locals do and stay shallow.
  • Cliff paths are unlit after dark and the edge is unfenced; carry a phone torch.
  • Agree auto fares before you get in; meters are rarely used.
  • Ayurvedic clinics vary widely in training and price; ask for the practitioner's registration and a written price before treatment.
  • Monsoon (Jun–Sep) brings rough surf, red-flag conditions and closed cafés.
