Thiruvananthapuram (still called Trivandrum) is Kerala's capital, built on low hills between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. The museum and zoo compound, the East Fort bazaar and the streets around Palayam fill a day and a half; the beaches people come for sit south of the city. Two nights works. December to March is dry and the best window; June to August is heavy monsoon. Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple admits Hindus only, so non-Hindu visitors see it from outside the gate.

Safety

Thiruvananthapuram is calm by Indian big-city standards; the real friction is auto fares, the temple dress code and monsoon flooding. Women travellers report less hassle here than in the north, but avoid unlit beach stretches after dark and keep to the main roads at night.
  • Auto drivers often quote a flat price to visitors; ask for the meter or agree the fare before you sit.
  • Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple admits Hindus only and enforces a dress code: men in a dhoti or mundu, no shirt; women in a sari or set-mundu. Rentals are sold near the gate.
  • Most ticketed museums and the zoo close on Mondays.
  • Monsoon rain is heavy and sudden from June to November; roads flood and beach swimming is unsafe.
  • Crossing roads is on you: vehicles do not reliably stop at zebra lines outside major junctions.
