Kamenice nad Lipou
Go for one night, or as a half-day stop on the narrow-gauge line: the chateau courtyard, the 700-year-old lime tree and the square take 2–3 hours.
Kamenice nad Lipou is a 3,800-person town in the Highlands with a pink Renaissance chateau, a lime tree said to be over 700 years old, and a narrow-gauge railway from Jindřichův Hradec. Foreign visitors are rare; domestic summer tourism and the heritage train fill the square. One night covers it, and the surrounding ponds, forests and marked trails reward a second day if you have a bike or car.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
- Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
- Czech Republic ↗Czechia is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
- Czech Republic ↗The currency is the Czech koruna (CZK), not the euro: decline dynamic currency conversion and avoid street exchange booths.
- Czech Republic ↗Motorways need an electronic vignette bought before you drive on them.

Getting around
The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. For the quarry swimming spot, the aleé at Heřmaň and the surrounding ponds you want a bike or a car; bikes can be rented at Hotel Berger (ask if you are not a guest) or from Czech Railways at Jindřichův Hradec station. Buses and the narrow-gauge train cover the region.

Watch out
Safety
- Most restaurants and small shops take cash only: draw koruna from an ATM in town before dinner.
- The narrow-gauge railway is not Czech Railways: buy that leg from the conductor, or buy the whole ticket at a ČD desk.
- Trains from Prague need two changes and take 3 h or more; check connections on IDOS before committing.
- Chateau interior opening is limited and seasonal — check the official site before you travel for it.
- Saturday afternoons and Sundays: only the Penny supermarket at the edge of town is likely to be open.
