Innsbruck

Give Innsbruck 2 nights: one full day for the old town and one for a cable car or Schloss Ambras. Ski trips add 3+ nights.

Innsbruck is the capital of Tyrol and the only Alpine city where a tram from the old town reaches a 2,000 m cable-car station in about 30 minutes. Two nights covers the Golden Roof, the Hofkirche and one mountain day; skiers and hikers use it as a base for a week. It sits halfway between Munich and northern Italy on the Brenner rail line, so it works as a stop between Austria and Italy rather than a detour.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Austria ↗Austria is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Austria ↗Motorways and expressways need a vignette (digital or sticker); driving on them without one brings on-the-spot fines.
  • Austria ↗Winter tyres or chains are required in winter conditions; hire cars from outside Austria may not have them fitted.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Hauptbahnhof to the Golden Roof is a 10–15 min walk. Trams and buses run under the VVT fare system, so one ticket covers tram, bus and S-Bahn inside the city zone. Tram 6 reaches Igls and Schloss Ambras, tram STB runs into the Stubaital, and the Nordkettenbahnen lifts climb from the old town to Seegrube and Hafelekar. Buy 24-hour or multi-trip tickets from machines; validate on first boarding.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old Town (Altstadt) and around Maria-Theresien-Straße

Walk to the Golden Roof, Hofkirche and the Nordkette lifts; highest prices, most noise.

Hauptbahnhof and Südtiroler Platz

Best for one-night rail stops: station, buses and trams at the door, 10–15 min walk to the old town.

Wilten

South of the centre near the basilica and Bergisel; quieter, cheaper, tram 1 and 6 nearby.

Hötting and the west bank

Local feel along the Inn; 15–20 min walk or a short tram ride to the old town.

Watch out

Safety

Innsbruck is a low-crime city and safe to walk at night in the centre. Real risks are mountain weather, unmarked trails and altitude on the Nordkette: check the forecast, tell someone your plan, and carry a shell.
  • Validate your ticket on the first tram or bus, or it counts as no ticket.
  • Old-town streets are largely car-free and much of the centre is paid short-term parking: park outside and ride in.
  • Brenner and Inntal motorways jam on winter and summer weekends; snow makes it worse.
  • Summer afternoons can turn wet and cool fast; carry a shell even on a hot morning.
  • Ski-season weekends fill beds and trains: book early.
