Mayrhofen is the main base in the Ziller Valley, with two ski lifts in the village and free ski buses to the rest of the valley, including the Hintertux glacier. Winter hotels mostly sell Saturday-to-Saturday weeks, so a short break is harder to book than a full week. In summer the same lifts carry hikers and bikers. The village is small enough to walk end to end in under an hour, and a car is not needed once you arrive.

Getting around

The village is walkable end to end in under an hour. Free ski buses link Mayrhofen with the other Ziller Valley lifts, including Hintertux. The Zillertalbahn narrow-gauge train runs down the valley to Jenbach, where it connects with ÖBB mainline trains.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a mountain resort. The real risks are on the slopes: collisions, off-piste avalanche terrain, and cold on the glacier. Wear a helmet, ski within your level, and check the avalanche report before any tour.
  • Winter hotels mostly sell Saturday-to-Saturday weeks; short breaks are limited and pricier.
  • Mayrhofen station only sells Zillertalbahn tickets: buy ÖBB mainline tickets before you travel.
  • The Zillertalbahn gets crowded with skiers and luggage; board early and keep bags out of the aisle.
  • Wi-Fi is patchy and often charged by the hour in hotels; buy an eSIM before you arrive.
  • Off-piste and glacier terrain needs a guide; check the avalanche report before any tour.
