Lermoos is a village of about 1,150 people on a shelf at 1,004 m in the Außerfern, looking straight across the Lermooser Moos at the Zugspitze. It is one of seven villages in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena and the one most people picture: small, wooden, clustered around a lift station. The village walks end to end in about fifteen minutes and has maybe a dozen restaurants. Come for the view, the Grubigstein lifts and the flat moor tracks; do not come for nightlife.

Getting around

Walk: the village is about fifteen minutes end to end and the lift base, hotels and restaurants sit inside that. The Tiroler Zugspitz Arena guest card, given by your host at check-in, covers regional buses (not trains), guided hikes and events, and discounts. Buses run roughly hourly to Ehrwald, Biberwier and the valley stations. The Z-Ticket is the summer lift add-on, valid 3–13 days from mid-May to early November. Bikes can be rented in the village; the Via Claudia Augusta cycle route runs flat along the valley floor.

Zugspitze via Ehrwald

Bus to the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn valley station, then the panoramic cabin

Ehrwald is 4.6 km. The cable car climbs 1,725 m in about ten minutes and turns 100 in 2026. Summer season usually mid-May to early November; adult return roughly €43–66 depending on option.

Seebensee and Drachensee

Bus to the Ehrwalder Almbahn, ride up, then walk

1½–2 h each way to Seebensee at 1,657 m on a wide track. Adding the Coburger Hütte and Drachensee is another 45 min up steep switchbacks. Go early: this is one of Tyrol's busiest trails on a fine summer weekend.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are mountain weather, wet rock on the Daniel route, and the Fernpass road on a summer Saturday. Tell someone your route before a big hike and carry cash for the huts.
  • The Fernpass jams badly on summer weekends and at the start and end of German school holidays; travel midweek if you can.
  • Tyrol runs anti-rat-run driving bans on minor roads in the Reutte and Imst districts on weekends and public holidays, roughly May–November, 07:00–19:00. The B179 is not covered, but check Tyrol traffic info before a summer Saturday.
  • You need a vignette for Austrian motorways either side of the toll-free Fernpass road.
  • Grubig II runs shorter hours than the lower lift, which matters in the shoulder seasons.
  • Several huts, including the Brettlalm, are cash only.
  • Restaurants close one day a week and the day varies: phone rather than walk.
  • The Deutschlandticket is valid on the Außerfernbahn from Pfronten via Reutte to all six Arena stations, but not on Austrian local buses.
