Reutte is the market town and administrative centre of the Außerfern, the northwest corner of Tyrol that sits against the Bavarian border about 75 km from Innsbruck. It is a low-key alternative to Füssen for the same mountain scenery: castle ruins above the Lech, a long pedestrian suspension bridge, and trailheads into the Lechtal and Tannheim Alps. Most travellers pass through on the way to Neuschwanstein or stop for one or two nights between Munich and Innsbruck.

Getting around

The town itself is walkable, but the ruins, lakes and trailheads are several kilometres apart, so most visitors drive. Local buses run from the centre north along the main road to the villages, and the Außerfern rail line links Reutte with Pflach, Vils and beyond. Bikes can be rented for the signed Radwanderwege; carry a map, because junctions are poorly signed and some links briefly follow the highway.

Watch out

Safety

Reutte is a small, low-crime town and walking the centre at night is unremarkable. The real risks are mountain: steep unguarded ruins, exposed bridge crossings in wind, and fast-changing Alpine weather above the tree line.
  • The Reutte station ticket counter keeps short weekday and Saturday hours and there is no ticket machine: buy on board with cash if you travel outside them.
  • Rail service here is run by Deutsche Bahn, not ÖBB; connections are infrequent and transfers can be only a few minutes.
  • Ehrenberg and Schlosskopf are unguarded ruins with steep, loose ground: wear shoes with grip and keep children back from edges.
  • Highline179 is exposed to wind and closes in bad weather; check before you walk up.
  • Many guesthouses and some restaurants close in the November shoulder season.
