Gondar was the royal capital of Ethiopia from the 1630s to the 1860s, and its walled Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also the usual staging point for Simien Mountains treks. In late 2026 the city sits inside Amhara, which the UK FCDO and US State Department place under advice against all travel; flights to Lalibela were suspended on 24 September 2026. Treat this page as reference for when that changes, not as a plan for this year.

Getting around

Blue-and-white minibuses and three-wheeled bajajs cover the centre; bajaj fares inside town were around 10 birr by day and up to about 25 birr at night in 2015, so expect more in 2026. Horse-drawn garis still run. You can hire a small blue taxi by the day for the church-and-castle circuit.

Safety

In 2026 the deciding factor is not street crime but the regional security situation: both the UK and US advise against all travel to Amhara, which includes Gondar and the Simien. If you go anyway, keep to the centre in daylight, avoid travel after dark, and register with your embassy.
  • Amhara is under advice against all travel from the UK and US in late 2026: confirm your government's current advisory before any booking.
  • Flights in and out of the northern airports have been suspended or rescheduled at short notice; never book a tight international connection.
  • Guides have taken cash for Simien treks and disappeared: pay only through a licensed agency with an office, or after a named recommendation.
  • Buses that advertise Gondar sometimes drop you at Azezo, about 13 km out, leaving a bajaj ride into town.
  • Timket (19 January, with surrounding days check) fills every room in the city; book weeks ahead or avoid the dates.
